OPAL

Outdoor Play and Learning

OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Play is a nationally recognised programme that helps schools improve the quality of playtimes for all children. It is based on the belief that play is essential for children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, social development, and overall happiness. Through OPAL, we have created richer, more imaginative outdoor environments where our children can explore, create, collaborate, and learn through play every day.

At Betty Layward, playtimes are seen as a vital part of the school day—not just a break from learning, but an extension of it. The OPAL approach helps children to:

  • Develop creativity and imagination
  • Build independence and confidence
  • Learn to manage risks safely
  • Improve social skills and teamwork
  • Become more physically active
  • Experience joy, freedom, and discovery in the school environment

OPAL also supports inclusivity, ensuring there are play opportunities for every child, regardless of age, ability, or personality.

What Does OPAL Play Look Like?

With OPAL, playtimes have become more varied and engaging. Children have access to a wider range of resources and spaces that encourage:

  • Loose-parts play (using materials like tyres, crates, tubes, fabric, and natural items)
  • Construction and building
  • Creative and imaginative play
  • Den building
  • Outdoor exploration and nature play (kayaks, natural loose materials)
  • Physical play including climbing, balancing, running, jumping
  • Quiet areas for calmer play, reading, or socialising

These opportunities allow children to choose how they want to play and develop at
their own pace.

Our Commitment as an OPAL School

As part of the OPAL programme, our school is committed to:

  • Providing high-quality, well-planned play opportunities
  • Creating safe, stimulating outdoor spaces
  • Encouraging children to take age-appropriate risks-the children assess the risk before participating
  • Supporting positive behaviour and relationships through play
  • Continually improving our play offer through staff training and development

We believe that play is central to children’s development, and OPAL helps us ensure
that all our pupils enjoy happier, healthier, and more active playtimes.
